Pneumatology is the study of the biblical doctrine of the Holy Spirit. There is no area of theology where there is more confusion than areas involving the Holy Spirit. And in like manner, there is no area where there is a greater need for understanding. This is the age of the Holy Spirit. Without His intervention in the world, there is nothing we could do to bring the world to the Savior. Without Him, we cannot witness effectively nor understand spiritual things. He is the one who leads us to salvation and sanctifies us in our Christian lives. He is our guide, our comforter and our protector in this evil world. He is also the one who equips us with spiritual gifts so that we can minister effectively in the body of Christ.
Much interest is given to the Holy Spirit from the early years of the 20th century with the beginning of the Pentecostal movement but the emphasis was on experience. A proper understanding of the truths about the Holy Spirit was lacking. This study will emphasize the Personhood, Deity and the works of the Holy Spirit. We will look at His work in creation, revelation and inspiration. Special attention will be given to the Holy Spirit’s work in the Old Testament and also in the life of Christ. Special emphasis will be given to His work in the life of the believer including regeneration, indwelling, baptizing, anointing, sealing, etc. The teaching ministry of the Spirit (illumination), His guidance and special assistance in prayer will also be considered. Another major area of interest will be the Spiritual Gifts which are much debated and misunderstood. It is unfortunate that due to the overemphasis of certain gifts of the Holy Spirit in certain circles, the Holy Spirit is practically ignored among doctrinally oriented groups. For many of them, the Holy Spirit was active during the Apostolic times but departed after that. That is one of the main reasons for the spiritual lethargy of many believers and churches. We need to rediscover the practical experiences of the presence of the Holy Spirit among us. I pray that this study will do just that.
